Twenty foreign prisoners lodged in the jail here have attempt suicide by consuming poison following the delay in releasing them from jail. A total of 72 persons hailing from Sri Lanka, Bangla Desh and other countries have been lodged in the central jail here. Majority of the prisoners come from Sri Lanka and Bangla Desh.
All the prisoners have been convicted for making forged passports and other travel documents. Since their jail term has expired, they have been pleading with the jail authorities to release them from prison.
Of the 72 convicts, 46 of them went on a fast from yesterday demanding their release and their deportation to their motherland. Even after the jail authorities held talks with them to end their fast the prisoners refused to budge. All the convicts who consumed poison have been hospitalized and undergoing treatment. Further investigations are on.
