Chennai, Aug. 14:
Multi-layered security arrangements are in place for the 73rd Independence Day celebrations at the St. George Fort, from where Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will unfurl the national flag on August 15.
Earlier, the Chief Minister will visit the war memorial and pay floral tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. Then he will be escorted by police pilots to the St George Fort.Chief Secretary Shanmugam will introduce to the Chief Minister the chiefs of three services, eastern commander of the Coast Guard, DGP Tripathi, Commissioner of Police Viswanathan and Additional DGP (L&O) Jayanth Murali .
Chief Minister Palaniswami will review the parade presented by the soldiers of the three services and policemen. After reaching ramparts of the fort the Chief Minister will unfurl the national flag at 9 am. He will deliver the Independence Day speech and present gallantry awards.
In view of the Centre abrogating the constitutional provisions that accorded a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and amid tensions with Pakistan, security has been tightened across the national capital and the neighbouring border areas. 15000 police personnel have been deployed for security duty.
With the 73rd Independence Day fast approaching, security measures at the Chennai Airport has been stepped up. This covers all areas of the airport, including parking lot. Passengers flying out of Chennai airport are requested to reach airport well in advance to avoid any inconvenience. The heightened security measures will be in place till August 31, says a release from AAI Chennai Airport.
