The forest department recovered the carcass of a male leopard from Marunthu Godown area in Singara range of forests in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris on Thursday.
The animal was about five years old, department staff, who found it during a routine patrol, said. “It might have died a week ago. The carcass was highly decomposed. No external injuries were found,” said an official.
Postmortem was conducted as per the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Forest department officials, NGO members and the village head were present during the process.
“The veterinarians, who conducted the postmortem, could not find the cause of the death as the carcass was highly decomposed. However, body parts such as nails and teeth were intact. Samples were collected for lab test. The carcass was later burnt inside the forest area,” the official added.
