Salem District’s population has crossed 38 lakhs said Collector S.A Raman, speaking at the World Population Day function in Salem on Thursday.
Delivering address at the function held in Sona College of Technology, said that while the population of the district was increasing at the rate of 4500 deliveries per month. The literacy levels stand at 80.2 percent for males and 65.2 percent for females. As part of population control measures, 1000 persons are being operated while 2500 are given temporary means of controlling pregnancy, he said.
Increasing awareness about family planning, gender equality, poverty alleviation, protection of mother and child welfare, health and human rights are the objectives of observing population day said the Collector.
Family health fortnight will be observed from July 11 to 24 as part of the World Population Day celebration, added the Collector. During this period campaign will be carried out to motivate couples about family planning and family health.
Families will be counselled and family planning operations will be conducted at government hospitals and primary health centres. Medicines to control pregnancy arebeing administered at Government Hospitals and the secrecy is being maintained said the Collector.
As part of the Population Day programme, the Collector flagged off a rally by college students and a signature campaign. He also administered the Population Day oath to the students. The function was attended by C.Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions, Dr.S.S.Suba, Professor, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, Dr.LArunachalam, District Officer, AIDS Control Society and other officials.
