12654 kgs of banned plastics seized from shops in six months

In the drive against non-degradable plastics, the Salem Corporation has seized from 3505 shops, 12654 kgs of banned goods in six months.

The drive against single time use plastics was launched by the local body as per the Tamilnadu Government’s order from January 1, 2019. Five teams were formed by the Corporation to monitor and seize the plastic items from shops and other establishments.

Up to June 30 the five teams conducted regular raids in the four Corporation zones targeting restaurants, grocery and fancy shop, sweet shops, bakeries, mobile phone shops, tea shops, textile shops tec.

In the raids conducted from January 2 to June 30, a total of 12654 kgs of banned plastic items were seized from 3505 shops. Rs.16.28 fine was collected from the shops found violating according to a press release from the Salem Corporation. To control the use and sale of the banned plastic items raids will be conducted regularly said Corporation officials.
