Single leadership not discussed at AIADMK leaders’ meeting EPS and OPS talk about facing local body elections

Chennai, Jun 12:

A crucial meeting of the ruling AIADMK’s office-bearers held at the party headquarters here on Wednesday morning did not discuss the single leadership issue. The party’s legislators, parliamentarians, district secretaries and other functionaries are taking part.

Chief Minister and party co-coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister and coordinator O. Panneerselvam attended. The event assumes importance in the light of a demand by sections of the party for a single leadership instead of the present arrangement of dual leadership.

Senior AIADMK leader and Madurai North MLA Rajan Chellappa criticised the dual leadership of the party and questioned why the general council had not yet been convened to discuss the party’s poor performance in the recent parliamentary elections.

He further stated that a general secretary should be chosen so that the party could be led by a single leader. Rajan Chellappa’s views on dual leadership and the need for a single leadership were endorsed by Kunnam MLA Ramachandran and K C Palanisamy who called for the convening of a general council meeting.

Kunnam MLA Ramachandran did not attend the meeting as he was indisposed. MLAs Prabhu, Kalaiselvan and Rathnasabapathi, to whom the Speaker had issued notices, did not attend the party meeting since they were not invited. Ministers O S Manian and C V Shanmugam also did not attend the meeting due to personal reasons.

Leaders and party functionaries were not allowed to bring mobile phones inside the party headquarters. The 90-minute crucial meeting urged that steps should be taken to face the local body elections which are expected to be held soon.

The meeting also discussed threadbare the reasons for the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections. Leaders and cadres were exhorted to remain united and work hard during the local body elections.

Five resolutions were passed in the meeting. One resolution thanked the members of the public for casting their votes in favour of candidates of AIADMK and its allies in the Lok Sabha polls and Assembly by-elections.

It thanked the BJP for having given an opportunity to the AIADMK to propose the name of Modi for prime ministership. By another resolution the meeting resolved to take up clean politics and work for the poor and the downtrodden besides women.
