Power tariff will be revised upwards by 30 per cent and the government will make an official announcement in this connection according to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). Talking to reporters, CITU’s state president S S Subramanian said that this year the government has proposed to increase the power tariff by 30 per cent.
This will fetch the government coffer Rs.20,000 crores. The steep increase will affect farmers and the general public. Had not the centre conducted the Lok Sabha elections, the government would have announced the hike in power tariff earlier.
Normally, if the government wanted to revise the rates it would have to get the approval of the state electricity regulatory authority. We have information that the Tangedco has obtained the approval of the regulatory body, he said.
The government has proposed to revised the tariff in two categories – 30 per cent and 47 per cent and the 30 per cent increase has been confirmed, he added.
